Happy one month birthday!

Happy Birthday

A few people have asked about how Honore and I came up with our little boy's name.   So let’s do a little break down.

“Calvin”

A Wrinkle In Time

Calvin and Hobbes

For Honore her love of that name goes back to a book from her childhood.   The award winning book A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle tells the story of three young children Meg Murry, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O’Keefe and their quest to rescue Meg/Charles’s father (and save the world).  Calvin O'Keefe is the third eldest of Paddy and Branwen O'Keefe's eleven children, a tall, thin, red-haired 14-year-old high school junior who plays on the school basketball team.

For me you only have to look at the comic strip written and illustrated by Bill Watterson… Calvin and Hobbes.   This was my favorite comic growing up, reading he paper every day to watch his exploits.   I also have a private joke with my wife that the name is perfect since he will be a blond haired terror.

Taran Wanderer“Taran”

This name has a bit of a story to it.   Once Honore became pregnant we went on a little book buying spree, picking up all of the books from our childhood to share with our child.   There was Blueberry’s for Sal, Corduroy, The Phantom Tollbooth, and Where the Wild Things Are just to name a few.   One of Honore’s purchases was The Chronicles of Prydain, a five book set by Lloyd Alexander.  It is really a great series of books even though Disney bastardized the second book, The Black Cauldron, in the mid 1980s.   Taran is the lead character in the series, a boy who is headstrong and courageous, though occasionally foolhardy.   So one night we were lying in bed, I think around the 5th month of the pregnancy and I asked Honore “what do you think of the name Taran as a middle name”.   That was all it took and she was sold.  Ironically, 10 days before Calvin Taran Gormley was born, Lloyd Alexander passed away at the age of 83.  Taran is the Welsh word for thunder.

So that is how we came up with the name for our Son.  Lastly, more photos have been added to Calvin's Gallery
